A five-step verification checklist
Learn
Use five checks before sharing AI-assisted work. (1) Source: Where does each important fact come from? (2) Currency: Is it current for the relevant date? (3) Scope: Does it apply to this country, product, client or project? (4) Consistency: Do numbers, dates and names agree with the original inputs? (5) Human approval: Who is accountable for the final decision? Record the result when the work may later be audited.
Not every sentence needs an external citation. A friendly greeting is low risk; a statement about a safety rule, medical symptom or contract obligation is high risk. Spend verification effort where an error would matter. When evidence is missing, state that clearly rather than adding an unsupported assumption.
Worked example
For a fictional meeting summary, review the original notes for every action, owner and deadline. Then check arithmetic in the budget against a calculator or spreadsheet. Finally ask the responsible person to approve the summary before sending it.
Practice
Create a verification record for a short invented training announcement. Include three facts, their source notes, check date, status and approver. Repeat the exercise with a public claim that requires an external source.
Key takeaway
A repeatable checklist turns AI output into accountable work.
