The four parts of a useful prompt

Learn

A prompt is an instruction to an AI assistant. You do not need special commands or a secret formula; ordinary language is enough. However, a request becomes easier to fulfil when it covers four practical components: goal (the task), context (what matters), format (how the response should look), and boundaries (what to preserve or avoid). Use only the parts that help. Overloading the prompt with irrelevant text can obscure the main task.

For an audience-specific task, name the audience and tone. For a factual task, state which sources may be used. For a repeatable process, provide a sample of the desired output. If you do not know the answer, ask the assistant to flag missing information rather than guess.

Worked example

Weak: "Write an email about a meeting." Strong: "Draft a friendly, professional email to five colleagues confirming an internal planning meeting on 12 November at 10:00. Keep it under 120 words, include the agenda below, and do not invent a location or meeting link." This sets the purpose, readers, length and boundaries.

Practice

Improve this weak prompt: "Help me prepare training." Your improved version should identify the audience, skill level, time available, learning outcomes and requested format. Use an imaginary course topic. Compare both outputs for specificity.

Key takeaway

Clear objectives and boundaries usually matter more than fancy prompt terminology.
